Khawla Nakua
2023 Professional and Community Winner Khawla Nakua is a freelance criminal Justice reporter, covering the treatment of incarcerated Muslims and prison conditions in the U.S. She has reported on Ramadan in prisons, the lack of transitional housing or halfway housing that tailors to formerly incarcerated Muslims' needs, and the decline of congregational prayer among Muslims due to being treated as a security threat.
“Outstanding, both in its muscular reporting and evocative color, and it's the only entry focusing on African-American Muslims, too often sidelined in mainstream media's stories on Islam. Pieces focus on prison inmates, and yet manages to depict their lives as dynamic and important.”
